New Reception Class

Posted on June 23rd, 2009 in Blog

It was great to see the enthusiasm of the 4 year olds as they entered the school to meet their new teachers for the beginning of their school career. It was education that fisrt got me interested in politics, our local reception class had 40 in the class which I found unacceptable and the lack of activities outside the curriculum was disappointing, this was before the national curriculum had been introduced. School should be a place where children learn not only the core subjects but also a wider curriculum to enable them to carry on an interest in life long learning. We also need to increase the level of physical activities, many children now prefer to sit in front of computers rather than playing outside and the obesity levels are increasing. We must instil a love of physical activity to keep our population healthy and we need to start young. Perhaps the London Olympics will inspire youngsters.

I am sure the new reception classes around the country will be full of eager children in September and I hope they will not be disappointed.

Armed Forces Service

I was pleased to be invited to this by Cllr Symes and show my support for our Armed Services. I know that every village would copy Wotton Bassett if they were in the same position and it is good to know that our Armed Services have the support of the public. I hope this becomes an annual occasion so we can show our support for the present serving armed forces as well as in November when we remember the fallen.
