Environment Bill - Setting Targets

22/01/2021 - I agree that we need to protect natural environment and wildlife, as well as tackling carbon emissions. I welcomed the Prime Minister's commitment to rewilding and protecting 30% of the UK and the Environment Bill will help with this pledge.

At the moment, while you are right that the Bill would not introduce specific targets on natural recovery, it will place a duty on the Government to set legally binding targets on air quality, water, biodiversity and resource efficiency and waste reduction. This means that experts, the public and Parliament will then have a role in developing those targets and monitoring progress.

I am looking forward to the Bill returning to the Commons next week and aim to attend and speak in the debate, which will allow me to hear about the amendments in more detail. I know that ministers are currently considering feedback on the Bill and may bring in changes themselves.
