Portsmouth South MP Flick Drummond has visited local charity Friends Without Borders and British Red Cross to see the work they do with destitute asylum seekers and immigration detainees at their base at All Saints’ Church, Portsmouth.
She met volunteers who run its Access to Justice project, which helps asylum seekers with the often difficult legal problems they face in the asylum system. Flick also had a chance to discuss the problems they face with clients of the centre’s drop-in service where those in need can get advice and support, and access a food bank.
Flick said: “It was really good to come to All Saints and meet the team here, who do great work with some very vulnerable people. It is right that we have rules on immigration and asylum, but sometimes people can get caught in the system. That is where Friends Without Borders and the Red Cross really help.”
Friends Without Borders Chairman, Michael Woolley, said “It was great to have a visit from such an interested and supportive MP. She can be a great help communicating with the Home Office. We look forward to working with her.”
